Syracuse
The beautiful Commune of Syracuse has a Greek history that is overwhelming. It is one of the most important cities of the ancient Greek world. The city is filled with ancient ruins and the remains from the earthquakes of 1542 and 1693. The Amphitheatre and the Teatro Greco take you back to a place where you can feel the devastation the Sicilian people must have suffered. The Ear of Dionysius, an artificial cave named by Caravaggio sits in the Latomia del Paradiso which now looks like a luxurious garden with citrus trees and greenery everywhere.
Ortygia Island, known as the old part of Syracuse is a beautiful stretch overlooking the water. It was rebuilt in baroque style and has the most stunning Piazza del Duomo. It is beautiful during the day and fantastic at night. This is the heart of Syracuse and where everyone goes to see and be seen!
